The Whole and its Parts: Researching Biodynamic Agriculture and Nutrition

The 3rd International Biodynamic Research Conference will focus on the holistic perspective of biodynamic food and farming research and its unique ability to connect different fields, disciplines and research methods. The conference aims to provide a forum for knowledge transfer, mutual learning and networking, and to open up new perspectives in research.

The Biodynamic Association UK, the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester, the Biodynamic Federation Demeter International, the Forschungsring, and the Section for Agriculture at the Goetheanum are working on a rich programme that reflects the diversity of biodynamic research and warmly invites researchers with an interest in biodynamic agriculture and nutrition to actively participate.

We invite contributions from all scientific disciplines and welcome inter- and transdisciplinary study approaches, as well as on-farm's and practitioner's research. We especially invite research based on Rudolf Steiner's Spiritual Science or Goethean observation if it is presented in a way that makes the logic of the approach comprehensible to the scientific community.

In order to encourage mutual learning and to allow new perspectives on biodynamic research to emerge, you are invited to present your research to colleagues in a variety of formats, including lectures, poster sessions, workshops, or other forms of co-creative work that you may propose.

If you wish to make a contribution in the form of a paper/presentation, you are invited to submit your proposal here. If your proposal is accepted, you will be asked at a later stage to submit a full paper of between 2 and 6 pages for the conference proceedings. Furthermore, We are also working on a special issue agreement with a scientific journal, where you will have the opportunity to submit a manuscript based on your paper at a later stage.

If you would like to offer a forum for co-creative work on a specific topic, you are invited to submit your proposal here. Please describe the thematic scope and methodological approach of your workshop using the form below. Workshops can be proposed e.g. to present and discuss issues related to inter- and transdisciplinary, but also trans-knowledge system research in food, agriculture and agri-food value chains, analytical methods to study life processes, new ideas for joint research projects/themes, policy-oriented workshops, debates and more.

Please note that you are welcome to present your project even if it is in progress or at an early stage of development - where results are not yet available. In this case, the focus should be on the research motivation, the development of the research questions, the methodological approach and the research strategy.

All articles will undergo a thorough review process. To be accepted for the conference, articles must meet the standards of good scientific practice, in particular comprehensibility and logical structure. Please make sure that the background and aims of your research are clearly defined, the methodological approach is comprehensible and appropriate to answer the research questions, the results (if presented) are evident, and the conclusions are based on the results and reasonably drawn.

Proposals can be submitted until 31 March 2025.

  • Formatting tables, figures, citations, and references

You cannot format the text in the boxes above. If you use tables and figures, refer to them as “tab. 1”, “fig. 2” etc. Use references only where they are really needed.

Cite references with one, two, or more authors according to the following example:

Jones (2000), Jones & Sparrow (2000), Jones et al. (2000).

    Tables and figures

Please submit tables and figures as graphic files (png, tff, eps) and name the files according to the number in the text (“table 1”, “figure 2” etc.). Pictures must have a resolution of 300 DPI or more. Please submit captions in a separate word document. Do not format captions, but use plain text. Captions should be short and concise. All captions may be in one document.

    Citation style

    One author: Jones (2000)

Two authors: Jones & Sparrow (2000)

More than two authors: Jones et al. (2000).
